Garden City
Garden City First United Methodist Church operates a food pantry to anyone in the community who is in need. Applicants are allowed one visit per month and need not be a resident of Garden City. Applicants will receive two bags, on with grocery basics and one with commodities such as toilet paper and soap. Hours of operation for the food pantry are 9:00 to 12:30 Mondays and Wednesdays. Garden City First United Methodist Church is located at 6443 Merriman Road, north of Ford Road.
The Garden City City Council will meet on Monday, November 18 beginning at 7 p.m. in the Civic Center Council Chambers located at 6000 Middlebelt Road.
Inkster
The Inkster City Council will meet on Monday, November 18 at 7 p.m. Meetings are held in person at Inkster City Hall, located at 26215 Trowbridge and via Zoom. Contact the city clerk’s office for the meeting ID number for Zoom at [email protected] .
The Inkster Commission on Aging Men’s Group is looking for members age 50 and older. The group offers engaging discussion on a variety of topics, social activities, guest speaker events, and a supportive environment to share experiences and meet new people. River Rouge
Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency will host a Customer Assistance Day on Friday, November 15 at River Rouge City Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Find out about assistance with utility bills, water bills, home weatherization, after school programs and Head Start programs. Bring ID and proof of 30 days of income for all household members 18 and older. This program will take place on the second floor. City Hall is located at 10600 W. Jefferson Ave.
The River Rouge Public Library will host Cider and Donuts with the Mayor on Saturday, November 16 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Residents can talk with Mayor Campbell and meet the city’s new Interim Public Safety Director Sotirios Arapakis while enjoying a fall snack. The River Rouge Public Library is located at 221 Burke Street.
The River Rouge City Council will meet on Tuesday, November 19 beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Court Room at City Hall, located at 10600 W. Jefferson.
The River Rouge School District is partnering with the Heart Work is Hard Work Foundation to present its 10th Annual Turkey Giveaway on Monday, November 25 at River Rouge High School for residents in the tri-city area of Detroit, Ecorse, and River Rouge. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon and will provide everything needed for a complete Thanksgiving meal. River Rouge High School is located at 1460 W. Coolidge Hwy.
Westland
Mayor Kevin Coleman will continue his Listening Tour on Tuesday, November 19 at the Jefferson Barns Community Center, located at 32150 Dorsey. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. Residents can meet the mayor and members of his administration, share thoughts, ideas, and concerns about the city or their neighborhoods.
Wayne/Westland
Registration is open for the 11th Annual Holiday Meal for Wayne-Westland Veterans and Active Duty Families. Registered recipients will receive a 12-16 pound turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, corn, green beans, cranberry sauce, and rolls, enough to feed a family of eight. The program is open only to veterans, surviving spouses, and families of active duty service members. The meal is free. You can also pick up and return a registration form at the Wayne Ford Civic League, located at 1645 N. Wayne Road. Registration must be received by Tuesday, November 19. Wayne County
The Senior Alliance’s free transportation service provides to non-emergency medical and social service appointments to anyone over the age of 60 living in western Wayne County and the downriver communities. This is a “ride of last resort” program, meaning all other transportation options, including public or community transportation must be ruled out before the Senior Alliance can transport anyone. The service is “curb to curb” and means someone must be able to get to the curb in front of their home and walk into their appointment without assistance from the driver. Hours or operation for this program are Monday—Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wheelchair accessible vans are available. For more information or to schedule a ride call 734-516-3009.
