Serving Metropolitan Detroit Since 1944
As a child, Marshell Long says she wanted to be a fashion designer. As an adult, Long has always held jobs within the retail industry, where she learned a thing or two about running a business.
About three years ago, Long wanted to put that knowledge to good use, and with her husband's support, decided to open her own business. Marshell's Boutique opened in February of 2017 and Long has been busy ever since. Marshell's Boutique offers casual and dressy apparel and accessories for women.
Assisted by her daughter, Tracy, Long puts the emphasis on customer satisfaction. Marshell's Boutique offers special orders and layaway service, and carries sizes from small to 3X. "A lot of the boutiques out here are really geared toward the younger generation; I target the businesswoman, or the mom who's going to a gala," she says. She also carries evening gowns in stock for prom, weddings, and homecoming. She does not carry swimwear or undergarments, however.
To broaden her business skills, she went back to school and currently attends business classes at Washtenaw Community College. A lifelong learner, Long says she is enjoying a second stint back in school. She also says being in college gives her the opportunity to be a role model for her grandchildren about the importance of education. "I want to show them that it doesn't matter what age you are, you can have it," she says with enthusiasm. Her goal is to create a stable, successful business which she can pass down to her family one day. "It's not about getting rich quick, that's why I try to keep my prices at affordable rates," she says.
A resident of Lincoln Park, Long says she decided to invest in her own community when considering a location for her shop. She says customers come from all around the area.
"Being an entrepreneur is tough," she says, adding that the past two years have provided valuable learning opportunities. Long has navigated challenges including establishing business credit, successful marketing, and feeling personally overwhelmed. However, she adds that the fact that she is still open for business is extremely satisfying. "We offer a little something for everybody," she says. "We can dress up, or we can dress down, it just really depends on what you're looking for."
