DOROTHY WASHINGTON WILL BE MISSED MAR. 29, 1936 - JAN. 24, 2022

On March 29, 1936, Willie & Elvia Lee Washington became the proud parents to two bundles of joy. Dorothy was the oldest of five to be born to this union. The Washington children, Dorothy, Doris, Willie, Robert, and Elaine were raised by their maternal grandparents, Cordie and Sarah Rivers. Dorothy was christened as an infant at Union Second Baptist Church by Rev. Copeland at the Palmerston location. When the church moved to 459 Beechwood, she moved right along with them and remained a faithful member until her passing under the leadership of Pastor Richard Thomas. Dorothy graduated from River Rouge High School in 1955. Dot as she was called was very active in the NAACP and other organizations. She also enjoyed sewing, bowling and family & friends gatherings. Dorothy was employed by the City of River Rouge for over 26 years and she served in many capacities throughout the city. She was with Beechwood Community Center for 20 years, served many years as the Director of the Tot Lot, housing, River Rouge Library, the medical building, and the Senior Citizen Center. She also held several civil service jobs including safety committee for River Rouge Police and Fire Department serving under the direction of three Mayors. Before answering God's call, Dorothy was the oldest living Matriarch of the Washington Family in Michigan. She was led to Heaven's Glory by her parents, Willie & Elvia Lee; siblings: Doris, June, Bow Wow, Elaine, adopted-sister, Valuntean McTaw and dear friend, Robert Bradley.
