INKSTER - The Weslyn A. Bennett Foundation held its second annual Kids and Cooking event on Saturday September 16th, 2023, at the Leanna Hicks Public Library in Inkster MI. The children were excited as they were able to be fitted with special custom made Weslyn A. Bennett Foundation chefs' hats. They got aprons and received raffle prizes. In addition, they received pizza tattoos and decorated pizza ornaments so you can figure out they made pizza!
Kids were welcomed and entertained by the Pizza Man. Chef Kellise Watts of Simply Delicious Catering made her second Kids and Cooking appearance as she taught kitchen safety and guided the children with recipes on making a special graham cracker treat. They also made ranch salad dressing from scratch. Each child had their own utensils, bowl, and ingredients that they were able to keep. They made a tossed salad, added their dressing and were able to eat their salads. The highlight of the day was making pizza! They got to make their pizzas with their pizza crust, sauce, cheese, and pepperoni cooked by our chefs on staff, volunteer Craig Peterson Sr., Board member Darryl Walker and volunteer extraordinaire Rodney Garrett.
Everyone had an enjoyable time. We thank Advisory Board member Chanel Cabbil who spearheaded this project, all the volunteers and the children and parents that participated. We received a donation of a pizza oven from Lowe's special thanks to them and we also had representation from Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency on site to give information of help and service to those of us that live in Western Wayne County. Special thanks to them as they helped fund our program this year and last year.
