Ecorse welcomes Secretary of State Benson and new Election Drop Box

The citizens of Ecorse are one step closer to being completely ready for the 2024 elections. Ecorse Clerk, Dr. Kimberly Whitsett took advantage of a grant program that provided the city one of the updated Absentee Ballot Drop Boxes. The new drop box comes with security measures and all of the bells and whistles necessary to make using this drop box a secure process.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson stopped by to participate in the reveal of the box. Before the reveal, Benson, explained the importance of voting and encouraging your family members to vote

Also in attendance, were 11th and 12 grade students from Ecorse High School along with School Board members and superintendent Dr. Talison. Benson and Whitsett explained to the students that if they will be 18 years of age on or before February 27, 2024, that they will be able to vote in the Presidential Primary Election. Several students raised their hands when asked if they plan on voting. One student asked, 'How can I vote?'. Benson explained that you have to be registered first and explained the many ways that they can vote. She then explained the many ways that a person can vote; at the polls, by absentee ballot or at the clerk's office. The two important facts that was shared by Clerk Whitsett is that you can pre-register to vote at the age of 16 years old and you can register and vote on the day of the election as long as it is before the polls close at 8:00pm.

The students were engaged throughout the presentation and asked several questions.

Before the students learned about the steps needed to tak in order to vote; they met the Ecorse Fire Chief, Dan Wright. He spoke with them about what it takes to be a fire fighter and what some of the things the fire fighters do while at work.

The students were able to get in the new fire truck that was named Ecorse Heavy Hitters and were able to talk to the fire fighters on duty.
