The National Day of Service is a federal holiday in the United States that is observed on the third Monday of January each year. It was established to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., an American Baptist minister and activist who played a key role in the American civil rights movement. The day is intended to encourage Americans to engage in community service and volunteer work in order to help address social issues and promote equality and justice in their communities .
The day is also known as Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and was designated as the first ever National Day of Service by Congress in 1994 1. The day holds a special significance as it is not just a federal holiday but also a commemoration which encourages Americans to actively contribute towards bringing about meaningful change in their communities
