Western Wayne County NAACP Holds Reception for Scholarship Recipants

GARDEN CITY - The Western Wayne NAACP works hard to show its presence in the communities it serves. For years the Western Wayne NAACP Scholarship Committee has put together packages for local students. Dr. Fleda Fleming, who has served as the Scholarship Committee Chairperson for over five years and her team have done it again for students entering their collegiate careers in the fall.

This year the awards ceremony was done differently. It was executed with a reception to celebrate the scholarship winners.

Four students received the Western Wayne NAACP Scholarship for 2024. Janae James, Wallace Bowie III, Sophia McKay, and Xavier Williams accepted their awards with grace, flair, and style. Each student presented a space for themselves, which served as a history lesson of their academic journey. Their table included honors, photos, diplomas and much more.

Recipients of the past also joined the celebration. They were allowed to update the Western Wayne County NAACP members on their progress and build networking relationships with the new Scholars and seasoned community members.

It didn't stop there for scholarship awardees. Students continued to be celebrated well into the evening. Members of the Western Wayne NAACP put together a gift bag that contained gear, reading material, and information on possibilities moving forward. Students were also gifted a membership into the Western Wayne NAACP as well as their scholarship check.

We all hope that students left the building feeling a sense of celebration and a part of the Western Wayne County NAACP family.. They definitely earned it.

This event would not have been possible without the work of Dr. Felda Fleming, the scholarship committee, the hard volunteer work, and the camaraderie of the Western Wayne County NAACP.
