The rise of Adult Learners

Life is a remarkable journey filled with opportunities to grow and evolve. It is a lifelong adventure that enriches lives at every stage. A notable trend post COVID is the will for more education. Universities have seen record number of applications. Many of those being adult learners. First timers, some college no degree (SCND), or other conventional and nonconventional learning programs, adults are serious about their schooling. If you are contemplating going back to school, remember that learning is for all ages.

Returning to school as an adult can be empowering. Adult learners are rediscovering passions and activities. Take master's student Kaylen English for example. English worked in her field of study for years before returning to school. She says, "The work experience really helped me discover what I'm passionate about and gave me time to decide what I wanted to do with my future." Your experiences, both personal and professional, have equipped you with a unique perspective that can enhance your learning journey. She adds, "I knew that in order to move up in my field so that I could help more students, I had to go back and get my masters. I wanted to learn how to be better at what I do!" This makes her an even more impactful student. Changing careers, developing new skills and growing in your current role is the motivation for most returning students.

It might seem challenging to juggle studies with other responsibilities, but every step of the way is a step closer to your dreams. "The hardest part of returning back to school for me was having to sit down for hours in a day. Life after college moves so fast you hardly have time to relax," says master's candidate Robert Oliver. According to market and business Gitnux data, 41% of higher education students are 25 years or older; the average age is 33, and 45% are married. Life happens and craving out time can be difficult.

Online classes have helped with balancing life. 53% of adult learners are enrolled online. "The advancement in technology has helped me adjust returning back to school," says Oliver, "Covid required many schools to adapt to online learning. This brought about a plethora of online classes, new software's and apps that helps students be able to navigate through the online college experience." Do what works best for you. You have the strength, wisdom, and perseverance to tackle these challenges. Embrace the support systems around you – family, friends, mentors.

Think of the satisfaction of achieving a long-held goal. "I graduate next year, and I am very excited for the opportunities to come!" English states, "I was able to find something I was passionate about and wanted to learn more. That encouraged me to go back." The pride in mastering new concepts, and the joy of discovering new passions. Education is not just about degrees and diplomas. English says, "I'm happy I waited and didn't pursue my master's right after graduating from undergrad. That time helped me really understand what is important to me." It is about personal growth, self-discovery, and the fulfillment of your potential.

Take that courageous step forward. Statics show problem solving, critical thinking, leadership, and communication improved.
