Vanguard Celebrates 30 Years of Community Service in Detroit's North End

The Vanguard Community Development Corporation, located in the New Center area of Detroit, honored its founder and other community leaders over the weekend. Since inception, this community-based organization has been the driving force behind positive change within the neighborhoods, surrounding its location. This is why Detroit's North End, continues to be a community of resilience.

Did you know that the North End is a historic neighborhood and at one time, it was home to the city of Detroit's wealthy and elite residents. Unfortunately, as time passed, this community endured some hard challenges, as they struggled with decline and poverty. Bishop Edgar L. Vann and Second Ebenezer Church through his vision were inspired to use economic development as a resource to help cultivate change.

To celebrate their achievements, this year, the Vanguard had an amazing Gala and it was hosted by Josh Landon, Anchor/Reporter of Fox 2 News Detroit. Having more than 250 attendees and special guest combined, the event was successful. Dressed in style, like Detroiters do! The ladies were seen wearing brightly colored gowns and dresses, while the men showcased their class and style by their suit and shoe selections for the evening.

Honorees, were chosen based upon being leaders and members of the community that had major impact on the "North End". Honorees included, Bishop Edgar L. Vann – Vanguard Founders Award, Malik Yakini, food equity activist – Vanguard Lifetime Achievement Award for Social Equity, Donald Rencher, CEO of the Hudson Webber Foundation – Vanguard Bridge Builder Award, Wendy Lewis Jackson, Managing Director Detroit Program, The Kresge Foundation – Philanthropic Leader Award, Daryl J. Carter, Founder/CEO of Avanath Capital Group – The Trailblazer Award, Cummins Inc. – Corporate Citizenship Award, Jerry Ann Hebron, longtime community activist – Community Collaboration Award and Leslie Graham Andrews, outgoing board chair – Vanguard Perseverance Award. Members of the "North End" and other community members and supporters throughout Detroit came out to show their support and love for Vanguard and its honorees.

By the end of the night, the gala concluded but there was an after-party for attendees to continue experiencing the fun, joy and excitement of the evening. National Recording Artist Anthony David, brought the vibes during the after-glow. As he gave a great performance, the small crowd gathered as he showcased his vocal skills and abilities. Singing songs that the crowd knew the lyrics had them standing on their feet dancing and singing. Even as attendees started to relax and wind down, the turn-tables were still spinning. DJ Rue, kept the party rolling well into the night as she had everyone still partying. By the end of the night, it was visible that guest had a ton of fun, as time was well spent.

To date, the history and the relationships that have been cultivated over the past 3 decades remain rich and strong. Vanguard Community Development Corporation continues to a beacon of light and hope for this community. Detroit's Historic North End, will continue being a vibrant and healthy community, as Vanguard core values are dedicated to economic equity and racial justice.
