Voting is a family thing

I remember when I was young, I would go to the polls at Northrup Elementary school with my parents. My sisters and brother would love to get in the compartment and pull the switch to close the curtain. (I know the people over 60 remember that experience) We would watch as our parents pulled the levers for their candidate. Once they were done, they would turn the switch the opposite direction and the curtain would open and we would come out all smiles. We had just voted. Well our parents had voted. But we felt like we were part of process. We couldn't wait until we could vote.

Well the other day, my dad and I went to vote. There weren't any curtains and we got to sit down while we voted. That was different... I guess that was because we participated in the Early Voting process. Either way, sitting down, standing up, we had completed the same process. We used our Voice by Voting in the election. Our family, including our children, grandchildren, Godchildren, in-laws and spouses are voters. I believe that was something that was instilled in us at a young age. I remember my Godmother, Mrs. Woodard, from Lenior Street, told me that we must vote in every election. As she was losing her sight to Glaucoma, she still wanted to vote.

There is no way that I won't cast my vote in any election. It is too important. That is one habit that I will make sure is passed down from generation to generation of the Bates and Wilson family. We have already been talking about it via text, on the phone and in person. I have checked to make sure my sons, daughters and my two oldest grandkids are registered and will be voting. They assured me that they were.

Are you passing on this generational habit to your family? I hope so because, When We Vote.... We Win!
