Storybook Trail Arrives in the City of Wayne

A Storybook Trail debuted last week in Wayne's Attwood Park. Developed through a collaboration between Wayne RESA, the city of Wayne, and the Wayne Public Library, the Storybook Trail provides an opportunity for families to promote literacy, imagination, and thoughtful discussion. Wayne Public Library Directory Jody Wolak explains, "The Storybook Trail is a great way for children and adults to enjoy reading, learning, and being outdoors at the same time. Pages from a children's book are displayed on signs along a paved path in the park so families can read and walk together. Each sign along the half-mile loop includes a suggested activity or question to encourage conversation, imagination, and critical thinking. The books on display will change regularly so people can experience new stories when they visit."

Earlier this year, Wayne RESA (Regional Educational Service Agency), received a one-time grant to promote place-based education and allocated some of those funds toward the creation of a Storybook Trail. Science Curriculum specialist at Wayne RESA Rich Bacolor reached out to the city of Wayne and the Wayne Public Library about the possibility of hosting a Storybook Trail in the city. Attwood Park was chosen as the location as it is a popular destination for families as it features attractive playground facilities and a well-maintained paved walking trail.

"The work that the city of Wayne DPW, the Wayne Library, and Wayne RESA, which was the driving force behind this wonderful project is greatly appreciated," says Wayne City Councilmember and Mayor Pro Tem Alfred Brock. "The parks are very important to me and to have an activity like this is welcome. I am sure that individuals and families will be able to enjoy this for a long time to come."

The project is a year-round installment and many of the books that will be featured on the Storybook Trail will encourage visitors to think about the natural world around them and will tie into the seasons and surroundings. "I think the Storybook Trail will be a great addition to the park and the community," says Wolak. "It's a fun activity that promotes multiple goals at the same time: literacy, learning, communication, and physical activity."

Brock adds, "This is an example of a positive and constructive way to deal with some of the problems we have seen with students. We are all engaged in lifelong learning and it is both comforting and thrilling to see that brought out into our lives in such a positive and effective way. Please come out and visit us at Attwood Park in Wayne and see if for yourself."

Attwood Park is located at 33601 Annapolis, north of Van Born Road.
