Serving Metropolitan Detroit Since 1944
Our administration would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the supportive members in
both the Michigan House and the Senate, which just this morning voted in favor of amending the
current law (PA 196 of 1986) that had allowed communities to opt out of regional transit. With
the support of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer who we hope will sign this legislation, we can now move
forward past that defeated barrier to put a countywide transit proposal on the ballot.
This amendment will finally put us on the path toward expanded transit options that will not only
make life better for our current residents but will make us more appealing and attractive to
individuals and businesses who might consider relocating here.
The business community understands transit benefits all too well. They understand recruiting,
and beyond that, a need for getting people to work. Not everyone can afford a car, gas and
insurance for minimum wage jobs.
Deputy County Executive Assad Turfe shared, "we have a moral obligation to ensure that
everyone has access to education, employment opportunities, and essential healthcare. With this
vote, we've honored that responsibility. The decision will also bring meaningful benefits to our
seniors and individuals with disabilities. Ultimately, this vote, with the Governor's support, gives
voters the opportunity to shape the future of transit in our County.
By amending PA 196, we are truly moving in the right direction toward doing what is in the best
interest of our resident
