President Jimmy Carter's Living Legacy

The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) joins the nation and all peace-loving people across the globe in mourning the passing of former President Jimmy Carter. Mr. Carter served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. In recognition of his many contributions to world peace, President Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

While his Presidency was marred by many crises, as a former President Carter spent decades being a peacemaker and a humanitarian. He will be remembered for generations to come. He and his wife volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. This helped the charity grow and help tens of thousands of people have a home of their own.

Jimmy Carter was a man of deep Christian faith who believed faith and morality have a place in the world of politics. As President, he put human rights promotion at the center of his foreign policy. As to Palestine, in 2006, President Carter sounded the alarm on the Israeli harsh reality in the occupied territories. His book, “Palestine Peace Not Apartheid,” exposed the Israeli- created reality of Apartheid in the West Bank and Gaza. Now all human rights organizations agree that the Israeli occupation regime is an Apartheid regime.

“President Carter was a peacemaker,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. “He believed in the inherent decency of the American people and the capacity of the US to improve the world,” added Hamad. “Had Jimmy Carter been in the White House, he would have never allowed the genocide in Gaza,” continued Hamad. “The Carter lesson is that who is elected to lead matters,” concluded Hamad.
